Oral Health Month
September 2005
Finding A Dentist is Like Pulling Teeth!
As Oral Health Month approaches, it is essential
that we are all more vigilant when it comes to
our oral health, especially considering the current
national shortage of dentists.
Recent data indicates that 56% of the adult population
is not registered with a dentist at all1 and 5,200
dentists are needed to bring the service standards
in Britain up to that of other EU countries. 2
Over the previous year
there have been numerous reports of incidences
where people have had to
resort to desperate measures because they could
not register with an NHS dentist. One of the most
extreme cases was Mrs Holdsworth, a 64 year old,
who recently confronted Tony Blair during a live
TV broadcast, telling him how she was forced to
use her husband’s pliers to remove seven
of her own teeth after suffering agonising pain
caused by gum disease.
The national shortage of
dentists is a real cause for concern, especially
when figures report that
90% of people in the UK suffer from gum disease.
Even more worrying is that the majority of these
people are not even aware that they have gum disease
or the potential implications.3 During Oral Health
Month we urge you to be more pro-active in your
approach to personal oral hygiene – after
all if you don’t do it who will?
Until recently there’s
been little we can do ourselves to treat gum
disease but a proven
treatment called Gengigel, which was previously
only available from dentists, is now available
from chemists and supermarkets.
Gengigel is the only product
of it’s kind
in the UK and contains hyaluronan, a natural substance
found in the body’s own connective tissue
which has been proven to double the body’s
rate of healing of inflamed and damaged tissue
in the mouth1. Priced at £6.49 (rsp.) for
a tube of Gengigel Gel or £7.99 (rsp.) for
Gengigel Mouth Rinse, it’s not too expensive,
it’s easy to use at home and will help you
to keep your teeth for longer.
